If you suspect someone has a fracture, provide appropriate first aid to help manage pain and prevent further injury. Here are some first-aid reminders for fractures that our telemedicine would like to share:

  • Immobilize the affected area: Keep the injured area as still as possible to prevent further damage. You can use a splint or sling to immobilize the area.
  • Apply a cold compress: If swelling or pain is present, apply a cold compress to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, with breaks in between. It can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain.
  • Elevate the affected area: Elevating the affected area above the heart can help reduce swelling and pain.
  • Do not move the affected area: Do not attempt to move the affected area unless necessary. If the fracture is severe, moving the affected area can cause further damage.
  • Monitor for signs of shock: Severe fracture can cause shock. Symptoms of shock include rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, pale or clammy skin, and dizziness. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek primary care services immediately.

It’s crucial to seek urgent care in Livonia, Michigan, as soon as possible, especially for more severe fractures. A doctor can determine the extent of the injury and provide proper treatment.

Remember, proper first aid can help manage pain and prevent further injury, but it is not a substitute for medical treatment. If you suspect a fracture, seek medical care services in Michigan immediately.
